Arizona Republican Leader, Sonny Borelli, Says Women Should “Put [Aspirin] Between Your Knees” to Prevent Pregnancy Instead of Voting to Protect Contraception Access

Across the country, the right to contraception is at risk. Despite a majority of Americans relying on birth control to plan their families, a coordinated federal, state, and court effort has emerged to take away Americans’ right to contraception.

Borelli’s direct quote, “Like I said, Bayer Company invented aspirin. Put it between your knees,” shocked many who have taken access to contraception for granted since the Griswold v. Connecticut decision in 1965.

This includes Arizona—where, in response to the state level Right to Contraception Act introduced in March 2024— Republican Senate Majority Leader Sonny Borrelli suggested that women wouldn’t need access to contraception if they kept a pill bottle between their legs to stop them from having sex.

The Right to Contraception Is At Risk

It may seem unimaginable that something as normal and popular as contraceptives could be taken away.  But special interest money and an increasingly polarized and extreme political class have made this a real risk.

In 2022, 195 US House Republicans voted against the Right to Contraception Act, seeking to block the federal government from guaranteeing Americans’ access to essential family planning resources like condoms, birth control pills, and IUDs. And there have been many other anti-contraception initiatives at the state level.

Until there is legislation on the books protecting the Right to Contraception, continued access to birth control remains in jeopardy in the USA.
