Backyard Camping: How to Create a Mini Getaway at Home

You don’t need to pack the car or drive for hours to enjoy the magic of camping. With a little creativity, your own backyard (or even your living room!) can turn into the perfect family getaway.

Backyard camping combines all the fun of the outdoors — stars, stories, and s’mores — without the long trip or forgotten gear. Here’s how to make your staycation adventure one to remember.

1. Set the Scene

You don’t need a fancy tent — any cozy setup will do!

  • Pitch a tent or make one from blankets and chairs.

  • Lay down sleeping bags, pillows, or yoga mats for comfort.

  • Add fairy lights, lanterns, or flashlights for a magical glow once the sun goes down.

Tip: Bring a basket of essentials: bug spray, water bottles, and extra blankets in case it gets chilly.

2. Campfire Fun (No Firepit Needed!)

If you have a firepit, roast marshmallows or hot dogs under the stars. No firepit? No problem!

  • Use your stovetop or microwave to make indoor s’mores.

  • Light candles or use a lantern to create that “campfire” mood.

Then gather everyone to tell silly stories, share memories, or play a round of “Would You Rather?”

3. Plan Simple Camp Games

Keep the fun going with easy, screen-free games:

  • Glow Stick Tag – Great for after dark!

  • Scavenger Hunt – Hide small items around the yard.

  • Campfire Charades – Act out camping-related words like “tent,” “bear,” or “mosquito.”

  • Star Gazing Bingo – Print a star chart and see who can spot constellations first.

4. Cook (or Pretend to Cook) Like Campers

Turn dinner into part of the adventure!

  • Make foil packet meals — chicken, veggies, and a little seasoning wrapped and cooked on the grill.

  • Or go simple: sandwiches, chips, and fruit.

  • Don’t forget dessert: s’mores or roasted marshmallows are a must!

Bonus idea: Have the kids be “camp chefs” for the night — they’ll love helping plan the menu.

5. Create a Cozy Evening Routine

As the night winds down, snuggle under blankets and enjoy some quiet time together.

  • Play soft acoustic music or nature sounds.

  • Read a family story by flashlight.

  • Watch the stars and share one thing you’re grateful for.

Tip: Make it extra special by giving your campsite a name — “Camp Kindness” or “Camp Family Fun.”

6. Sleep Under the Stars (or Not!)

If everyone’s feeling adventurous, spend the night outside. If not, just enjoy the experience until bedtime and head inside for a comfy sleep — no judgment!

Either way, your kids will remember the laughter, the twinkle lights, and the feeling of togetherness.
