Whether you’ve got a backyard, a balcony, or just a sunny windowsill, these kid-friendly gardening projects will grow real, edible snacks your family can enjoy all summer long.

 1. Lettuce Bowl

  • How to do it: Grab a shallow pot or container, fill it with potting soil, and sprinkle a mix of lettuce seeds. Keep the soil moist and in a sunny spot.

  • Snack it into: DIY salad bar night! Let kids snip their own leaves and add their favorite toppings.

2. Strawberries in a Hanging Basket

  • How to do it: Buy everbearing strawberry seedlings, plant in a hanging basket with drainage, and place in full sun. Water daily.

  • Snack it into: Fresh fruit cups, yogurt parfaits, or straight off the vine.

3. Mini Bell Peppers

  • How to do it: Start with seedlings in a medium-sized pot, place in a sunny area, and water regularly. These grow well in containers or garden beds.

  • Snack it into: Dip in hummus, slice into sandwiches, or stuff with cream cheese.

4. Herb Garden in a Shoe Organizer

  • How to do it: Hang a fabric shoe organizer outside, fill each pocket with soil, and plant herbs like basil, mint, chives, and parsley. Water every other day.

  • Snack it into: Homemade pizzas, lemonade with mint, or herb butter toast.

5. Container Carrots

  • How to do it: Choose a deep container (at least 12 inches), fill with loose soil, and sow carrot seeds. Keep moist and thin out sprouts as they grow.

  • Snack it into: Washed and eaten raw, dipped in ranch, or roasted with honey.

6. Garlic Greens

  • How to do it: Stick a garlic clove (pointy side up) in a small cup with soil. Place on a sunny windowsill and water lightly. Green shoots appear in days.

  • Snack it into: Use the shoots like chives—on eggs, toast, or baked potatoes.

 7. Cherry Tomato Tower

  • How to do it: Plant cherry tomato seedlings in a large pot with a tomato cage. Place in full sun and water consistently.

  • Snack it into: Add to kabobs, pasta, or enjoy right off the plant with a sprinkle of salt.
