In October, Governor Gretchen Whitmer launched Michigan’s Take Control of Your Birth Control program, offering free contraceptives and reproductive health resources at over 300 facilities statewide.
Announcing the initiative, Whitmer emphasized the importance of accessible reproductive care, stating, “Decisions about reproductive health care should be between a woman, her doctor, and her trusted community. In Michigan, we must always protect your fundamental right to control your health and your future.”
Community Support
Many Michiganders are praising the program.
“Providing birth control, especially free, is amazing,” said Grand Rapids resident Jennifer Whitby. “As a young woman, it’s awesome to have this available for those who need it.”
The program offers a range of resources, including over-the-counter birth control pills, emergency contraceptives, condoms, and educational materials, aiming to empower individuals with knowledge and choices.
“It’s not always a main focus in schools,” said Sally Tran, another Grand Rapids resident. “This program not only provides free contraceptives but also educates people who might not fully understand their options.”
Addressing Health Challenges
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) highlighted the need for better sexual health education, as gonorrhea and syphilis rates have risen over the past decade. Programs like this can play a key role in prevention.
“Being able to walk in and ask questions without judgment is so important,” Whitby added. “If you don’t have someone to talk to, these resources make a big difference.”
Accessibility
The Take Control of Your Birth Control program does not require insurance, making it accessible to everyone at no cost while supplies last.
