Republican lawmakers banned together to block the Right to IVF Act for a second time this year. The procedural vote required 60 votes to advance he bill, but it failed 51- 44.
The Right to IVF Bill would have established a right for Americans to access in vitro fertilization treatments and empowered the Justice Department to enforce the law. It would have also made IVF more affordable to the average working American.
"Well, today’s bill is about as pro-family as it gets,” Schumer said ahead of the vote. “It helps create families, IVF does. It says that access to IVF should be basic right for all. And it will make sure insurance companies cover IVF treatments in their plans.”
The bill was especially important to protect access to IVF in the United States as fringe groups across the country continue to push lawmakers to ban IVF.
