Tariffs Are Making Holiday Decorating Harder for Families

For many families, decorating the Christmas tree is one of the most joyful traditions of the season. But this year, higher tariffs are pushing up the cost of artificial trees and basic holiday décor, forcing households to rethink how they’ll deck the halls.

Artificial trees are expected to cost 10% to 20% more, and even simple items like lights could see price jumps of up to 63%. For families already stretched by food prices, rent, and everyday expenses, these added costs can turn a beloved tradition into a stressful decision. Parents who normally buy a new tree, upgrade their lights, or add festive touches may find themselves scaling back or searching for cheaper alternatives.

The challenge is made worse by shrinking inventories. Importers brought in about 15% fewer artificial trees this year to manage their own rising costs, meaning families who shop later in the season may have fewer choices — and higher price tags — waiting for them.

However, live Christmas trees, grown almost entirely in the U.S., are expected to remain reasonably priced with plenty of supply. For families looking for a more affordable option, real trees may offer a way to keep the season feeling special without absorbing the brunt of tariff-driven price hikes.

Holiday decorating is more than shopping — it’s about creating memories, celebrating togetherness, and giving kids something magical to look forward to. And for some, rising costs are making that magic harder to reach this year.
