Breaking: Catholic & Evangelical Leaders Say Trump’s Tax Bill is Immoral

A group of pro-life U.S. Catholic Bishops, evangelicals, and other faith leaders have signed a letter calling on Senators to vote no on Trump’s tax bill, calling the legislation “a moral failure for American society as a whole.”

The letter was signed by dozens of faith leaders, including Cardinals Robert W. McElroy of Washington, D.C., and Joseph William Tobin of Newark, New Jersey, Rt. Reverend Philip N. LaBelle Bishop of Olympia, WA, and Rabbi Daniel Weiner of Seattle, WA. It argues that the legislation would harm families and increase poverty among the nation's most vulnerable populations.

“The moral test of a nation is how it treats those most in need of support. In our view, this legislation will harm the poor and vulnerable in our nation, to the detriment of the common good,” they wrote.

Faith Leaders Particularly Concerned How HR1 Will Impact Families

1. It makes it harder for parents to raise their children

This bill proposes cuts to programs American families rely on like the Child Tax Credit, Medicaid, and SNAP. These are essential programs that support parents in meeting their children’s basic needs. Cutting them would have a harmful impact, making it much harder for families to thrive.

2. It harms families who’ve played by the rules

Instead of addressing the real issues in our immigration system, this bill increases funding for aggressive enforcement tactics that seek to separate long-settled, tax-paying families. These measures create unnecessary instability in communities. We need practical, humane, and compassionate reforms that prioritize keeping families together.

3. It undermines family opportunity and economic mobility

HR1 would eliminate programs that help families achieve economic stability. It undercuts support for working parents and overlooks the central role families play in a strong economy. A responsible, pro-family budget should invest in opportunity–not reduce it.

The signers are inviting others to join them in prayer at nalecprayer.org.
